"I will not be patted like some dog," said this one person to my old professor once, apparently, as he was telling me this story about how this golden student of theirs walked out of his dissertation hearing because he was upset at how they complimented him. Wait, complimented him, you said? Guy says he doesn't get it, right? Some people just have no manners. Such a big ego at such a young age, et cetera, et cetera. Now, when a society of fools rewards pseudo-intellectual thought with prizes and degrees, clowns and pretenders alike begin to genuinely believe in their own "genius". We've all seen this movie before, right? Anyway, imagine that I want you to be stupid. Like really, really passionately dumb. You don't like being stupid though, do you? It makes you feel left out of the big game. But you sure do like being smart. So, every time you do something extraordinarily stupid, I will give you a little tap on the shoulder and gently proceed to mystify and elevate your "masterpiece of modern thought" to such an abstract form that even you won't be able to decipher its true value. Or, rather, decipher how incredibly and unbearably mediocre it is when compared to what's actually out there. Remember what they say about one man's garbage being another man's whatever, whatever? Yeah, that thing. Anyway, you ask the modern musician and they'll tell you: "I don't even know how I do it, it just comes to me, man." That's the effect of 15 producers writing one song. That's a funny (and sad) thing, because, the more you sit with yourself and learn to see the world for what it is, truly understand it - the less "wow, you did everything we told you to do!" sounds like a compliment. Like, yay-hurray, I've completed my social programming! Anyway, here I am reminiscing about this bold individual today, and I wonder where they are now, or whether they know just how truly rare of a specimen they amount to. I surmise that they might be the singular exemplary case of a modern academic establishment having actually created a healthy, free-thinking individual.
