Unhealed suffering manifests into fragmentation of the mind, lost time. This fragmentation then manifests into loss of reality. The demon of schizophrenia can't take hold in a non-fragmented psyche. It can only live in broken things because it is a broken thing itself. Fragmentation of the psyche has a great toll on the spirit. It is not karmic consequence that causes this though, but the opening up of channels through which a loyal follower could become possessed. Understand that fragmentation happens when there is internal strife - but fragmentation is also an act of creation. Every molecule, every living organism fragments itself to reinvent its very own being. Yet the act of birthing (also a fragmentation) has unforeseen consequences.
