Spirit and Soul are two different modalities. Spirit is the animating force behind all that is living and sentient. It is that which animates the body. So it is the primal force that allows for the movement of all things tangible. Soul is the immediate and observing self that the body is connected to, the conscious mind, the wavelength. When the soul connection is severed or interrupted, outer consciousness may temporarily enter to fill the space and serve as an equal or partial "animating force" to the body. What you see during bouts of drunkenness, drug use, etc. Those beings are not demons, they are elemental forces. Think of it like an "essence" of a thing that, as a symptom of its existence, is attracted to certain attitudes and energies, with a primitive directive for self-preservation. Demonic influence, on the other hand, or their effect only occurs after full possession of a human vessel. The true meaning of the word Daemon (დაიმონე) is "to enslave" - "that which enslaves". Basically, spirit is the mechanism that allows anything to be driven at all, soul/consciousness is the driver, body is the vehicle being driven. Of course.
