The desert knows a thousand things
And has known a thousand more
The desert knows its every bound
But never knows its shores
The desert knows the sand it holds
The weight of every speck
But doesn't know the hearts of those
Who in the desert dwell
The desert knows the fate of men
Who see the oases blue
But doesn’t know their final thoughts
Are genuine and true
The desert knows the merchant’s plight
And the tributes that he brings
Yet doesn’t know the merchant’s lie
Of the gifts the desert gives
The desert knows the one who tries
Who walks with cautious step
But doesn’t know the reason why
They never ask for help
The desert knows the hidden coves
Where secret lovers meet
But doesn’t know the oaths they gave
In silence to upkeep
The desert knows the scorching sun
But doesn’t know the rain
The desert knows the dreams of those
Who wish to meet again
The desert knows the lover’s song
To which twin souls would dance
But doesn’t know why one still sings
When the other has long passed
The desert knows a thousand things
And the desert knows them well
But doesn't know the hearts of those
Who in the desert dwell
